More about Andy

Andy Mann is a renowned Sony Artisan of Imagery, photographer, filmmaker, Emmy-nominated, and 12-time Telly Award-winning director who is driven by a deep passion to document and protect the world’s marine environments. He has logged thousands of hours, off all 7 continents, exploring the depths of our ocean to capture stunning visuals and raise awareness about the fragility of nature.

After an early start in adventure storytelling focused on climbers, a deep-rooted affinity for the sea inspired him to pursue a career that combined his love for photography and marine conservation. As a founding member of the nonprofit SeaLegacy, Andy’s work has played a pivotal role in communicating the story of our rapidly changing planet and inspiring critical change. Today, he tells stories for a broad range of organizations.

  • In 2013, while Andy was working with National Geographic’s Pristine Seas Expedition, the Russian Geographic Society awarded the program the Crystal Compass Award for the storytelling that led to the designation of the world’s largest Arctic national park, in Franz Josef Land, Russia.

In 2015, he directed the first Oceano Azul Foundation expedition to Azores, resulting in the declaration of 150,000 square kilometers of new marine protected area in the Azorean Sea. His work in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean in 2018-2021 helped create the world’s first international marine protected area.

An accomplished storyteller, songwriter, and recording artist, Andy shares compelling multimedia stories that resonate with audiences worldwide, showcasing the delicate balance of marine ecosystems and shedding light on the urgent need for preservation.

The Helmsman: Songs & Stories from the 7 Seas

In a dynamic evening of storytelling and live music, National Geographic photographer Andy Mann takes audiences behind the scenes of the planet’s wildest places. Sailing the seven seas to document and protect nature, he’s joined by multi-instrumentalists who blend folk traditions, original songs, and salty tales to inspire wonder and conservation.

"Science and data can help inform policy, but to get someone to care about the ocean enough to protect it? You have to really hit them in the heart, and that's the power of imagery."
